Labeled “one of the best places to live in California” by CNN Money Magazine, Santa Clarita has guaranteed a safe and innovative place to live. Santa Clarita was officially incorporated on December 15, 1987 from pre-existing communities (Newhall, Canyon Country, Saugus, and Valencia) as well as parts of unincorporated Los Angeles County (Acton, Agua Dulce, Bouquet Canyon, Castaic, Stevenson Ranch, Sulphur Spring and Vasquez Rocks). For almost 30 years, the city of Santa Clarita has strived to make sure its 250,000 residents have a safe place to live while enjoying a high quality of life. This is due to Santa Clarita’s comprehensive emergency services and public safety programs, which emphasize the safety of youths and businesses.
In order to guarantee the safety of Santa Clarita residents, the city works with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in several smaller programs including Crime Prevention Unit, Graffiti Task Force, and Sheriffs Business Alliance.
Established in 2011, the Crime Prevention Unit of Santa Clarita provides law enforcement services for the 55 square miles of the city and the 593 square miles of unincorporated Los Angeles County. 8 Crime Prevention Zones were mapped out and are overseen by a Zone Leader Deputy Sheriff. These Zone Leaders, who make up the Crime Prevention Team (CPT), are responsible for a detailed review of all crime within their zone on a daily basis. In addition to the Crime Prevention Unit, a Crime Research Center was also established in 2011, providing an area where Zone Leaders can use the latest technology to combat crime in the Santa Clarita Valley.
The Graffiti Task Force is especially important to the city of Santa Clarita and its strides for eliminating graffiti throughout the city. Over $600,000 is spent on graffiti removal each year and since 2007 over 1,000 graffiti vandals have been arrested throughout Santa Clarita. Pressure washers are used to remove graffiti from unpainted hard services. Graffiti wipes and paints with environmentally friendly chemicals are used as alternate methods for graffiti removal.
The Sheriffs Business Alliance is designed to help protect the business community in the city of Santa Clarita. Their job is to assist the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s station in identifying specific problems within the local business community. The Sheriffs Business Alliance also assists local employees and employers by providing valuable safety and crime prevention information.
