CAL FIRE

Having been providing their services since 1905, CAL FIRE has been dedicated to the fire protection of California land for over 110 years. Through contracts with local governments, CAL FIRE also provides a number of other emergency services for 36 of California’s 58 counties, including Santa Clarita. Handling more wildland fires than any other organization in the world, and with over 31 million acres of privately-owned wildlands to protect, CAL FIRE has had their work cut out for them, but the men and women of CAL FIRE have continued to act with safety and respect in the varied emergency services provided through the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Responding to more than 5,600 wildfires each year, and the resulting 172,000 acres of burnt land, CAL FIRE acts on each one, dispatching a number of firefighters, fire engines, and sometimes even aircraft responders. Acting on events that transpire from things other than fires, the CAL FIRE department is also quick to be on the scene for events such as swiftwater rescues, hazardous material spills, earthquakes, and more. CAL FIRE holds a great amount of experience through a number of past events like the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the 1991 tunnel fire in the Oakland/Berkeley Hills, and the Northern and Central California floods in 1997, 1998, and 2006. CAL FIRE has also been able to assist in a few of the wildfires around Santa Clarita. While the department of CAL FIRE, as well as the rest of the counties of California, never wish for these disasters to occur, they have such vast experience in them that they are regularly asked to help or take charge in managing the aftermath of California disasters.

Working from the Oregon border to the Mexico border, CAL FIRE has slowly expanded in their services since their humble beginnings. They have evolved through understanding the changes occurring in the world through these new kinds of emergencies and have adapted easily through implementing new technologies and training techniques to act on them. As availability of fire and prevention knowledge and information continues to become more available in Santa Clarita and other surrounding areas, CAL FIRE will never hesitate on a call and will always be quick to act on an emergency.
