Earthquakes are an unfortunate occurrence in the Santa Clarita Valley in Southern California. Being prepared and knowing what to do in order to stay safe during an earthquake is important for everyone, especially children. The County of Los Angeles Fire Department has designed an earthquake simulator, called Shakey Quakey House, that simulates the experience of an earthquake and teaches the importance of earthquake safety and how to prepare for one if they are in the classroom and away from home at the time.
Inside the Shakey Quakey House there is a small room designed to look and feel like a schoolhouse inside, with real desks and a chalkboard. Each trailer is outfitted with nine child-sized seats, one adult seat and one wheelchair accessible seat children will be experiencing a miniature earthquake complete with shaking, falling objects and sounds. Before this they will prepare the children with a short video featuring cartoon character Yogi Bear, voiced by actor Dan Akroyd, and afterwards the children will be given an official Yogi Bear earthquake preparedness booklet to take home and share with their families.
