Shakey Quakey House
Earthquakes are an unfortunate occurrence in the Santa Clarita Valley in Southern California. Being prepared and knowing what to do in order to stay safe during an earthquake is important for everyone, especially children. The County of Los Angeles Fire Department has designed an earthquake simulator, called Shakey Quakey House, that simulates the experience of an earthquake and teaches the importance of earthquake safety and how to prepare.
The Shakey Quakey House is a trailer-mounted simulator designed to look and feel like an actual schoolhouse inside, with real desks (bolted to the floor) and a chalkboard. Each trailer contains nine student-sized seats, one wheelchair accessible seat, and one adult seat. The simulation begins with a short video featuring Yogi Bear and his friends guiding the kids through an exercise where they will see, feel, and react to the sensations of an actual earthquake, including structure shaking, falling objects, and sounds. The experience lasts approximately three minutes. All participants receive a Yogi Bear earthquake preparedness booklet after the simulation to take home and share with their families.

Shakey Quakey House Is An Earthquake Simulator Designed To Promote Earthquake Safety
Shakey Quakey House earthquake simulators were designed to educate children about how to prepare for and stay safe during an earthquake in a way that they can understand as well as share with family members. Children get to find out what it is like to experience and survive a powerful earthquake firsthand. As the simulator shakes, the kids duck under their desks quickly to stay safe from any falling objects, which are simulated with stuffed animals flying across the room. The goal is for these kids to go home and discuss earthquake safety with their families, and to develop an earthquake preparation plan at home.
The Shakey Quakey House will be featured at the 2015 Santa Clarita Home and Garden Show and Emergency Expo at the Valencia Hyatt on April 25th and 26th. It will be a great time for children to experience an earthquake in a controlled setting and receive valuable information that the Shakey Quakey House provides in Earthquake preparedness. The simulators are available to schools and community organizations throughout LA County and can be reserved from LA County Fire Department.
