Experience Nature in Santa Clarita
Placerita Canyon is home to Santa Clarita history. One story goes that back in 1842, under the Oak of the Golden Dream located in Placerita Canyon, Francisco Lopez dreamed of finding gold. Francisco Lopez would be the first to discover gold here in Santa Clarita and kick start the Californian gold rush. The Walker Cabin which was built by Frank Walker and his family in 1920 and is now a landmark.
Placerita Canyon is an east-west running canyon featuring cool, shaded oak groves, a willow and sycamore-lined seasonal stream and numerous other interesting plant and animal communities. It’s a great for learning about history and hiking trails that radiates throughout the park. There are short and long hikes, so there is a trail for everyone. If you chose to go on a longer hike it can lead you to the seasonal waterfall and to the top of the Santa Clarita Divide.
There are many programs that the Placerita Canyon Nature Center offers. Some of the programs offered are: family nature walks, native live animal presentation, blooms of the season, bird walks, twilight hikes, community nature education, and a bird walk at Castaic Lake Recreation Area. Placerita Canyon Nature Center welcomes volunteers to help make the park a better place. Volunteers at Placerita Canyon Nature Center are encouraged to take Docent Naturalist Training. Docent Naturalists lead hikes for elementary school groups. Training for this program is done once a year in January through March. The volunteer program is a 501c3 non-profit volunteer group that assists the County of Los Angeles in the operation of Placerita Canyon Natural Area.
