Offering another option for the parents of Santa Clarita, SCVi Charter School excludes no individual and welcomes all students of any background. Initiated in the fall of 2008, SCVi Charter offers a project-based K-12 curriculum and follows an approach to education where each student will “learn to learn” and lead a successful life while also enriching the world around them.
At SCVi Charter, they do not staff teachers, but instead employ facilitators who remain in close proximity with students to help guide and encourage students instead of govern and regulate student work. SCVi Charter also adheres to the PBL method of learning, or the Project-Based Learning practice of instruction. Working in groups to solve problems, students collect information from a variation of different sources to then analyze and incorporate the gained knowledge into their problem solving. Their learning is considered much more valuable to students since the tactics they followed are tangible experiences instead of lectured lessons. Toward the end of the PBL approach, students are evaluated through the knowledge they have gained and how well they are able to communicate it.
Despite the unique learning method, SCVi Charter is not a private school, and remains an independent institution for those in Santa Clarita as well as anywhere else in Southern California. While they are able to manage themselves and create or follow their own learning methods, SCVi is overseen by the local school districts, but still remains an independently run public school. Because SCVi is indeed a public school, these hands-on learning methods are available to all students as the school remains tuition-free. Similar to any other public school, because SCVi is a publicly funded school, they are required to administer STAR testing, but they instead teach critical skills that students should learn anyway to implement the use of them in the tests rather than cramming all of the skills and strategies for only the testing instead of real life.
Maintaining the goal of setting a new example for education, SCVi Charter remains an institution and culture who value the community, and hope to change the world for the better starting with those whose plans and changes will last the longest: students. While they believe that people are born as natural leaders, SCVi only wishes to polish the skills of all students and provide them with new opportunities for discovery and success starting in Santa Clarita, but expanding to the rest of the world.
