A Santa Clarita Orthodontist recently explained some of the differences between clear and metal braces.
The first thing that comes to mind are Metal braces, also known as traditional braces. Many parents that may have had braces when they were younger are familiar with metal braces. Metal braces have been around a long time, since the early 1900’s.
Not many people are as familiar with clear braces because they are much newer.

“They are newer because of the developments that we’ve had in ceramics,” explained an Embrace Your Smile official.
In the past, metal braces were more trusted than other types of braces. Ceramic materials were not as reliable as metal for braces because ceramic was more brittle. Adding more forces to the teeth could cause the braces to break.
Over the years, many improvements such as making brackets less brittle and stronger have been made to clear braces. Today, they can now do everything that a metal bracket can do.
“When my patients ask me what is the difference between clear and metal braces, what I tell them is it’s just a difference between wearing a white T-shirt and a black T-shirt. It’s your preference,” said an official from Embrace Your Smile.
Choosing the option that will be most comfortable to you to wear is the most important decision you can make. For 1 to 2 years, you will be wearing your braces, so it is very important to follow the advice of your orthodontist as to which option is best for you.
One of the fun things that has been added to wearing braces over the years is the ability to add colors to either choice of braces. Some popular themes are adding school or team colors to braces. Colors can be changed out as often as desired.
